Relais et Châteaux – Still a good idea after 60 years!

This year Relais et Châteaux celebrates its 60th birthday. The association was created by Marcel and Nelly Tilloy, music hall artists who left Paris when the Nazis arrived in 1940 establishing themselves at La Cardinale an ancient hostelry on a bend in the Rhône between Valence and Montelimar.
Many of their clients were motorists heading from Paris to the South of France. The Cardinale and a number of other top establishments offered a quiet refuge from the busy RN7 but Marcel was concerned about plans for the development of the Autoroutes specifically the A7 built in the late fifties and sixties. He feared that motorists might whizz past his retreat and journey from Paris to Nice in a day without any form of civilised stopover. Clearly there was a need for promotion, emphasising the quietness of their location now that traffic was migrating to the Autoroutes.
Marcel Tilloy’s cousin was Editor of the fashionable magazine “Plaisir de France” and in 1954 a plan was drawn up to advertise La Cardinale. Unfortunately the cost of a full page advertisement in Plaisir de France was too high for La Cardinale alone and Marcel hit upon the idea of grouping together a few of the top establishments on or near the RN7 for joint promotion.
Apart from a few performances for the Footlights whilst at Cambridge, I cannot claim to have much talent for the music hall, but I am convinced that staying in a Hotel like ours should be fun. I am grateful to Marcel and Nelly for their great idea which provides an essential medium for small, top-end hotels and restaurants to promote themselves jointly. I am proud that we have been members for more than 30 years. Maybe one day the A1 will become an Autoroute?
