Rockingham is one of the most attractive villages in our area, and the castle with its spectacular hilltop site is most picturesque. The collection is fascinating and contains some surprises like 20th century English pictures and the teas are delicious.
Rockingham now hosts a very full calendar of events such as Rockingham history days, food fayres, music events etc.
Perhaps you will be puzzled, as to why, when the original fortification was built, about 900 years ago it was arranged so as to face due North. Michael Saunders Watson provided me with one answer. Along the wide valley over which the castle keeps watch runs the river Welland. The Danes and Vikings apparently ran their boats up the river and used
it as the base for raids on surrounding country.
